Glossary

We offer these definitions for those who may be unfamiliar with our worship services.

  • Call to Worship: A passage of scripture (usually a Psalm) that is read to prepare our hearts and minds to enter into God’s presence. Psalm 100:4; Hebrews 12:29
  • Votum (dedication): A passage of scripture (usually a Psalm) that is read to confess our dependence upon God. Psalm 121:1-2; Psalm 124:8
  • Salutation: A passage of scripture that is read to remind us of God’s greeting that we may respond in praise. 1 Corinthians 1:3; Revelation 1:4
  • God’s Law: A reading of Exodus 20:1-17 or Deuteronomy 5:6-21 to call us to love God and our neighbour. Matthew 22:37-39; Romans 13:10
  • Assurance of Pardon: After the reading of God’s law, we are called to remember our salvation in Christ apart from the law. Romans 3:21; Galatians 3:11
  • Doxology: Our final song of praise. Psalm 100; Psalm 150:6
  • The Lord’s Parting Blessing (or Benediction): A passage of scripture that is read to remind us that as we go forth to serve the Lord in this world He blesses us in all that we do. Numbers 6:24-26; 2 Thessalonians 3:16
